Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using such treatments should be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
